Buddhism on Wikipedia Product Requirements Document ( PRD )
Purpose and Demographic
The Buddhism on Wikimedia Working Group bridges the gap between ancient Buddhist wisdom and modern digital preservation by combining custom AI tools with Wikimedia platforms. As caretakers of the largest Tibetan language etext archive, we focus on creating high-quality Wikisource editions of Buddhist texts and expanding Wikipedia coverage of Buddhist concepts.
✦ Target Demographic
Who is the product for? What kinds of users or organizations benefit?
The Buddhism on Wikimedia Working Group is for Tibetan Buddhist scholars, translators, and digital preservationists who want to contribute to the preservation and dissemination of Tibetan Buddhist knowledge.
It is also benifitial for AI company who wants to build AI model for Tibetan Buddhist knowledge and make different kind of products to solve different kind of problems.
✦ Problem Statement
What issue or opportunity does the product aim to address?
Buddhist knowledge and languages like Tibetan remain significantly underrepresented in Wikipedia and AI training data. Traditional communities often lack accessible tools to contribute to the digitization of their literary heritage, resulting in a scarcity of authentic Buddhist knowledge in digital platforms. This creates a problematic cycle where AI systems trained on existing data perpetuate these gaps.
Product Objectives
Main objective of this working group is to create a comprehensive and authoritative digital archive of Tibetan Buddhist texts, and expand Wikipedia’s coverage of Buddhist concepts and historical figures.
✦ Core Objectives
By end of 2025, we aim to have 1000+ Tibetan Buddhist texts in Wikisource, 1000+ Tibetan Buddhist concepts in Wikipedia and 1000+ entities in Wikidata.
✦ Non-Goals
Clarify what this product won’t do to avoid scope creep.
✦ Impact Areas
By increasing the Tibetan language and Buddhist knowledge digital footprint, the existing LLM response will be more accurate with authentic Tibetan Buddhist knowledge backing and upcoming models will be trained on more authentic Tibetan Buddhist knowledge.
