Collaborative Planning Document

This collaborative planning document outlines our approach to making Tibetan medical knowledge accessible in Chinese. Please feel free to comment or contribute to this document.

Problem Statement

[Current section needs definition - please articulate the specific challenges and opportunities this project addresses]

Our Strategy

  • Catalog relevant resources on Wikidata (including major Tibetan editions, commentaries, and English/Chinese translations)
  • Publish source texts (4 tantras and 4 major commentaries) on Wikisource
  • Create and publish scholar-validated AI translations on Wikisource
  • Extract key concepts and relationships from the 4 tantras
  • Document information about each key concept from primary sources
  • Develop well-sourced articles for each concept with rigorous citation
  • Implement progressively through MVPs, beginning with the 1st tantra (root tantra)

Tactics (Implementation Approach)

1. AI-assisted Preparation of Tibetan Source Materials:

  • Develop comprehensive catalog of editions and commentaries
  • Acquire high-quality digital images
  • Convert to searchable text format (via OCR or manual input)
  • Create “diplomatic versions” preserving original characteristics of major editions
  • Produce comparative version documenting all spelling variations
  • Establish verse-level connections between commentaries and root text
  • Develop a “critical version” with standardized spelling informed by commentaries

2. Scholar-guided AI translation of the root text:

  • generate the disambiguated master text
  • standardize terminology in the gloss
  • generate a zero-shot translation with best existing model
  • edit the translation with the disambiguated master text and relying on the commentary/tradition of your choice
  • add footnotes from linked resources

3. Populating Wikipedia articles:

  • extract key terms from disambiguated master text
  • create entries in Tibetan or other languages
  • list all explanations and useful information from linked commentaries
  • combine as an article with links to sources
  • add info to the Wikipedia page with links to texts in Wikisource

4. Publishing sources on Wikidata and Wikisource:

  • add list of editions, translations, and commentaries to Wikidata
  • publish images on Wikimedia Commons
  • publish diplomatic version and images on Wikisource
  • publish comparative version on Wikisource
  • publish critical version on Wikisource
  • Translate in many languages and publish in Wikisource
