Representing root texts and commentaries on Wikidata

Currently, there are no available property options for “Commentary on” and “Has commentary” in Wikidata. As a temporary solution, we are using:

  • “Derivative work” for marking a commentary in relation to its root text.
  • For example: [Derivative work]
  • “Main subject” for marking the root text in relation to its commentary.
  • For example: [Main subject]

You can view the currently available bibliographic properties in Wikidata here.

Should we propose the following new properties to Wikidata:

  • “Commentary on”
  • “Has commentary”

I think it would be a good idea to propose a property yes, that usually creates interesting discussions and it usually gets resolved relatively fast

Would you like to do it? We are happy to do it but I think it will be better to have things aligned with BDRC’s ontology.

well if there was a lot of technical subtle things I would want to do it but “commentary on” is pretty straightforward, and it’s good for the team to get some engagement with the Wikidata community, so I propose you do it and I’ll back it up
